Can't Sync Outlook Tasks with Small Business Sever
Hello - I'm a first time poster here. I tried to search for a solution to this in prior posts, but could not see this particular issue discussed. Here's my setup: Samsung Omnia 2, running Windows Mobile 6.5 professional Syncing with a Microsoft Small Business Exchange Server over Verizon wireless network The phone automatically syncs just fine for calender, email and contacts. I connect it with a USB periodically to sync some other files that will not sync through the server, i.e., various word docs, etc. That generally works just fine too.
But, for some reason, I can not get Outlook tasks to sync at all. They will not sync via the server and they will not sync via the USB connection. I've tried to do some research on this and found some information that made me wonder whether the Small Business Server supported sync of Outlook tasks - if it did not, that would really, really surprise me though. I'm hoping someone can confirm for sure whether the SBS will support sync of Outlook tasks, and if so, any ideas to resolve this issue. I am not a server expert or IT pro - I know enough to be dangerous (literally). My IT guy who installed my server seems to be stumped by this issue. I'm hoping someone here has words of wisdom for me. Thanks for any help.

Re: Can't Sync Outlook Tasks with Small Business Sever
Thanks for the response. Sorry for the slow reply - I had to get back to my office to connect the phone to my pc and check the settings. Activesync does show both the Exchange Server and Windows PC as devices being synced. Under the options menu, the only available selections for the server are contacts, calendar and email. They are all checked. Tasks is an item available to be selected under the PC menu, but the box is not checked. I believe I tried at one time to check that task box and just sync manually with the usb cable and was not able to do that which I guess may make sense if my outlook files are being stored on the server and not on the pc (I'm not exactly sure how that works). The phone is not being synced with any other pc. Any other ideas? Thanks for your help.

Sorry, I'm a bit rusty with my SBS versions. Do you know if this runs the equivelent of Exchange 2003 SP2? (Don't worry if you don't as I'll look it up when I get 5 minutes!)

Re: Can't Sync Outlook Tasks with Small Business Sever
Honestly, I don't know whether SBS is the equivalent of Exchange 2003, and actually, I guess that's part of the question I have. I'm pretty sure Exchange 2003 does support syncing of Outlook tasks. But, in trying to research this, I have seen some information that leads me to believe that SBS does not; however, that information was not definitive. The SBS was touted as such a robust solution for small business, I really find it hard to believe that it wouldn't support complete integration with Microsoft's widely used porductivity/contact management program, i.e., Outlook. Anyway, that's my first question. Then, assuming SBS does support task syncing, I need some help to figure out why that isn't working on my phone! I do appreciate your taking time to respond and help me with this.

Re: Can't Sync Outlook Tasks with Small Business Sever
OK - here's what I've done. I wasn't exactly sure how to check on which service pack I've got. I read somewhere else a suggestion to download Microsoft's Best Practices Analyzer for SBS 2003 to do that. So, I installed the BPA, and ran a scan. It said I was running SBS 2003 SP1 and Windows Server 2003 SP1 and Exchange Server 2003 SP1. Checked for updates using BPA. It said I needed some updates, so I let it do that automatically. Then ran a scan. Then reported I am running SBS 2003 SP1 (same as before), Exchange Server 2003 SP1 (same as before) and Windows Server 2003 SP2 (this updated). Checked for updates again using BPA and it reports that everything is up to date. Since BPA still reports that I'm running Exchange Server 2003 SP1, I assume that the Exchange Server 2003 SP2 update is not one BPA does automatically. So, I manually downloaded SP2, saved it to a hard drive, and let it automatically extract. That process completes - no errors - but BPA still reports that I am running SP1. I have no idea what is going on there. Any thoughts? Any chance installing Windows Server SP2 before Exhange Server SP2 created a problem of some sort?
Thanks again for your help.

Re: Can't Sync Outlook Tasks with Small Business Sever
Once you'd extracted Exchange 2003 SP2 did you go into the extracted folder and install it? Just FYI, if I was to build an Exchange server I'd always install the OS and fully update to the current level before installing any applications, so installing the Server SP before the Exchange SP should not make any difference at all.

Re: Can't Sync Outlook Tasks with Small Business Sever
OK - once again - thank you. I think the problem is resolved. I thought I would report on the resolution - maybe it will help someone else someday. I did get SP2 installed. I had earlier looked for a setup file to run after the download was extracted, but it was named in a way that was unfamiliar to me - "update.exe." With your promting, I looked again and got SP2 installed. I also installed the Microsoft Activesync Web Administration Manager for Exchange. Both installed fine. After that, I could see no change in the way Activesync wanted to handle syncing of tasks. Under the Activesync settings menu, the task box was listed under the PC sync menu and not the Exchange server menu. I could see no way to reconfigure those settings. I then read this whitepaper on using windows mobile with SBS 2003 - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=8be70d72-1e5a-4128-a30c-dafeeb43544d&displaylang=en. It references a "Synchronization Options" dialogue box in Activesync that allows control of how files are synced. I probably directed Activesync not to sync tasks with the server wihen I originally set up the phone - I don't remember. But, I could not figure out how to access that "Synchronization Options" dialogue box except in the initial setup process. Maybe there is a way to do it - but I could not find it. So, I just deleted the partnership with the phone in an effort to start over with Activesync and get to that menu. After doing that, for some reason, I could not re-establish the partnership. So, I uninstalled Activesync, re-installed it, connected the phone, let the connection wizard run, clicked through the menus, and selecting tasks to be synced with the server. The phone synced correctly, including tasks. So, problem solved! Finally! I'm wondering whether I could have done that initially. In any event, I'm glad to have installed all the updates, especially Exchange Server SP2 because it provides the remote wipe feature in the event the phone is lost or stolen. That could be a really valuable feature if I ever need it. So, I really appreciate your helping me with that. Thanks again for the help.

Re: Can't Sync Outlook Tasks with Small Business Sever
No problem, glad you got it sorted anyway, although incidentally, with Service Pack 2 installed, Exchange 2003 will provide remote push email functionality which is fantastic. Just out of interest it might be worth you running windows update on your server and make sure everything is up to date. An unprotected Exchange server is a juicy prize for a hacker or spammer.
