I have a HTC Snap running WM 6.1 and was wondering if anyone could tell me how to setup custom ringtones for SMS and MMS. Thanks

The Windows Mobile Training site has a number of tutorials here including one to set ringtones for incoming calls , MMS , SMS messages etc..

Start - Settings - Sounds.

Scroll down to the different notifications. You'll need to have copied your sounds to your "My Ringtones" or "Application Data\Sounds" directories to get it to show up in the list.

I guess I should clarify. the issue is if it is possible to assign a ringtone for sms from a specific contact.

 Doug's right, you'll need a third party app for this. I pointed one out the other day for someone else. I'll try and find it again.
