    Is HSDPA REALLY Worth It??

As I sit here in my office at home, pondering everything I need to do and what I have to do while I'm at home and what I NEED to do on the move day to day. I'm really questioning if I should go a head and buy the unlocked HTC Touch Pro 2 or wait for the AT&T version or any US version of it other than T-Mo's.

The only reason I have not purchase it already is that I would like to have US HSDPA on it for true 3G. But actually I'm pondering the thought - DO I REALLY Need it!

OK there it is, now every geek, guru and road warrior! This is your chance to sound off and tell me why I REALLY need HSDPA on my device. I do know that I REALLY NEED a WM Device and soon! I actually reverted back to my moto MXP 200 smartphone and had a brief moment of relief! But that will not do what I MUST do on a daily basis while on the move!

I ask myself this question all the time in reverse.  I use an unlocked AT&T Tilt on T-Mobile USA as my primary phone, and wonder if I should upgrade to a phone with T-Mobile 3G.  (As sexy as the TP2 is, no D-Pad is a deal breaker. If I go 3G, it'll be with the Pharos Traveler 137- no physical keyboard, but has buttons!)

Honestly, I've never found the lack of 3G speed to be a problem.  EDGE is perfectly suitable for email, fast enough to update maps on Bing or Google, and, while sluggish for web browsing, with server-based browsers like Opera Mini, it isn't a problem.  Streaming audio works ok, but video is pretty much out of the question (unless I use Skyfire, which is a server-based browser like Opera Mini, and can handle video but at slow frame rates.)

HOWEVER, what you'll miss by not having 3G is simultaneous voice and data.  Missing the occasional call because your phone was fetching email, or Bing not updating maps/traffic because you're on a call will annoy you if you're not used to it.  In my case, my phone is more of a data device than a voice device, so I don't find it a huge problem, but if you do a lot of voice calling, it certainly could be an issue.  If EDGE and voice could work simultaneously, I wouldn't really care about 3G at all.

Having said that, if you intend to use AT&T, I'd wait for the AT&T Tilt II (their TP2.)  There are plenty of decent WM Pro phones you could grab on eBay or Craigslist cheap today (Cingular 8525 or AT&T Tilt) to tide you over, then dump for nearly what you paid for it when the Tilt II drops, or just keep it as a spare.  My WinMo phone is too useful a tool not to have a backup!

Re: Is HSDPA REALLY Worth It??

so, i've had the tp2 since july.

    enjoying it.

    i have owned

    sx56

    sx66

    8125

    8135

    x7500

    x7510

    i live in manhattan.

so i can tell you that i will get the at&t tilt2 (branded pro2) when it comes out.

i use the phone all day long to look for work and get work while i'm working.

3g / umts / hsdpa  makes a clear difference vs. edge / gprs

    you can easily see it.

i think the pro2 radio is hardward disabled for 850 / 1900 hsdpa / umts othwise i would wait and try to unlock the band

(i like the tp2 keybaord vs. the tilt2)

so it's keep it in great condition, but the tilt 2, sell the pro2 on ebay and get on with my life.

the pro2 is the best phone htc has yet made. i use everything it's got. all the time.

I'd say wait for the TP2 for at&t to come out if your not in a rush (its only going to be a few months) I on the other hand strive and live off of 3g, because it does make a difference in data and what you can actually do with your device.

Thanks everyone for their comments! I really appreciate them! Well since Sprint just announced their TP2 Sept. I hope AT&T will launch the same month...although I have heard Oct. I have decided to wait...and get the unlocked version of AT&T's TP2...

    Again thanks for the comments!

Re: Is HSDPA REALLY Worth It??

The bottom line is that it depends what you use your device for.

I, like Todd I think, use my device primarily for communcations. When it comes to emails, SMS, voice etc there is very little to gain from a good EDGE connection that 3G will give you. In fact, I almost always set my devices for GPRS or EDGE for everyday use as the millisecond or two I get my emails quicker over 3G doesn't really matter as much as increased battery life. Again, as Todd said, you have the simultaneous voice/data issue, but again I rarely find this a problem. Where it really does matter is for hardcore web use. For a device like the Touch Pro 2 that excels when you're surfing then if you do not have WiFi available a lot of the time then you'll want 3G. So that's it really. Web junkie's with no WiFi NEED 3G.
