Active Sync 4.5 Repair Every Time I restart the PC

Hi I’m using Active Sync 4.5, Windows XP SP3, Outlook 2003 SP2, Palm Treo Pro with Windows Mobile 6.1  I initially set this up and all works fine, however every time I restart the PC I get the following message   errorso anything that was previously syncing can no longer be synced. I have followed the advice that’s on the message and that makes no difference at all. The only fix I have found is to Detect and Repair Active Sync which does the job, however it only lasts till I restart the PC  Advice appreciated, as running Detect and Repair every time is a nightmare Regards John Berman

    Welcome to The Connection, John.

Do you mean Detect and Repair of Active Sync. I think you mean Detect and Repair of OUTLOOK ?

I have tried Detect and Repair of OUTLOOK but the problem persists, the only way to fix it is Detect and Repair of Active Sync

I didn't know there was a Detect and Repair in Active Sync.

Have you tried reinstalling Active Sync ?

IF you got into Control Panel \ Add remove Programs and select Active Sync there is an option to repar.

Reinstalling Active Sync does the job but only until I restart the PC - not an ideal senario as I need to reinstall everytime I restart the PC

I guess a setting is nopt being saved as it works fine till I restart and then the only way to get it going is to Repair Active Sync which is the best way as it remembers all the settings or reinstal and start over

I would also reinstall OUTLOOK - this should not affect your data, but to be safe please backup all your .pst files first.

Also uninstall Active Sync. Then delete the Active Sync profile folder found in

    C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Microsoft\Active Sync\Profiles

    Then reinstall.

    Hi, John -

I've seen a couple of references to this issue elsewhere. Some suggested fixes are below - if you've got time to try these, please let us know if any help you:

    1. Ensure that Outlook is set as the default mail client under Tools > Options, as well as in Internet Explorer's Options section.

    2. Verify that your firewall software (such as ZoneAlarm or OneCare) isn't blocking ActiveSync.

    3. Check the Add/Remove programs panel on your PC and look for installed Outlook patches having to do with Junk Mail - some seem to attribute the error to these, and removing the patches supposedly fixes the issue.

Your suggestion works but only until I restart, that seems to be the issue here

Yes I did, no matter what the end result seems to be the same, obviously restarting the PC does something ?

What is your setup? - is this just a PC in your home, or a work PC in a work network?

    Is this a normal restart?

    John Berman:
obviously restarting the PC does something

Hi, John - it does seem like one possibility  could be that some kind of startup actions, either inside a corporate network or with an anti-virus software package, could be affecting the registry changes on the PC that need to be set for ActiveSync to work correctly.

We asked our internal Windows Mobile support people at MS, and here are some suggestions we received:

The Palm Treo Pro has a setting that toggles between USB storage and ActiveSync.  It’s called PC Setup under Settings/System.  If this has been set to “Set up my PC” it should be on Synchronize.

If the user is seeing this dialog after setting up a partnership and restarting the desktop then something is either preventing the registry changes from persisting or resetting the registry state on boot up.

    • Make sure they are shutting down normally and not pulling power or using the force power down feature of most PC’s. (hold power button for 6 seconds.)
    • Check if they see the “last boot failure” warning and choose to boot from last known good configuration.
    • If the desktop is part of a domain check with the domain administrator to see if there is some script run on startup which is intentionally disabling desktop e-mail sync or intentionally restoring the registry to a previous state.
    • Check for anti-virus or uninstall helper software which has the ability to automatically restore registry state.
