We just received this Q&A from Microsoft about the forthcoming Windows® Marketplace for Mobile apps that will release with 6.5 phones in the fall. I think this will help clarify some of the questions that have come up in our community.
What can customers expect from Windows Marketplace?
A rich and integrated marketplace for searching, browsing and purchasing mobile applications from Windows phones based on Windows Mobile 6.5, or from a PC, by simply using a Windows Live ID.
How and when will Windows Marketplace be available?
Windows Marketplace will launch together with Windows Mobile 6.5 in the fall of 2009. Windows Marketplace will be pre-loaded onto all Windows Mobile 6.5 devices.
Will Windows Marketplace be available on other versions of Windows Mobile?
At this time, Windows Marketplace will be available for WM 6.5 phones. Microsoft is looking into the potential for developers to build on the previous version of the Windows Mobile platform.
Will Windows Marketplace be offered on non-Windows Mobile devices?
No. There are no plans for Windows Marketplace to support non-Windows devices.
Can Windows Marketplace be accessed from a PC?
Yes. All of Windows Marketplace’s functionality can be accessed from the Windows Marketplace web portal.
What are the differences between Windows Marketplace for Mobile and Zune Marketplace?
Zune Marketplace enables a customized music and video experience on Zune devices, while the Windows Marketplace for Mobile delivers a customizable experience on Windows phones with a unique set of games, entertainment, and utility applications.
What countries will Windows Marketplace for Mobile cover?
Windows Marketplace for Mobile will offer full commerce capabilities in 29 countries. In addition, users in all other countries will be able to access the catalog of free applications.
How many applications will be available? Will the current 20,000+ application catalog be available?
Microsoft is working with the large community of Windows Mobile developers to have them submit their current applications for Windows Marketplace certification. Customers will have access to a large application catalog at launch.
How can customers purchase applications with Windows Marketplace?
Customers will have the option to purchase applications on Windows Marketplace for Mobile with a credit card or have charges appear directly on their phone bill (with participating mobile operators).
Can people return an application for a full refund if unsatisfied?
Yes, customers can return applications within 24 hours of purchase for a full refund. There will be a limit of one refund per month, per customer, to avoid potential abuse of this feature.
