Our good friend Adam Z Lein of Pocketnow.com has just posted a great little how-to on using the Calendar application in Windows Mobile to invite almost anyone - not just people who use Outlook - to an appointment. A teaser:

There's "a nice little feature in Windows Mobile where you can send “Meeting Requests” to people. When the recipients receive the Meeting Request in their email, all they have to do is click the “Accept” button and the meeting will automatically load into their calendar (depending on what type of email client they are using). ... This works best with Windows Mobile, Outlook, Entourage, Outlook Web Access for Exchange, and Blackberries. It does not work so well with Windows Live Mail Desktop or Hotmail"

Great info - Thanks Adam - I use this feature a lot, for business appointments with co-workers. Also useful when I want to add something to my son's calendar !! I just add it to mine, invite him from that new appointment and when he receives this as an email it adds it to his calendar. He uses a MAC and it goes into the iCal application.

Just wanted to add that there is also an update feature that works great also. A question was asked recently in a Microsoft forum about how can one update someone else's calendar on their mobile device while they are out and about, with new times, etc.. if you are not using an Exchange server. Well if you update the time or location of an appointment that has been sent as an invite, this update is automatically sent out as an email, and when this email is read on either a PC or a mobile device, the appointment will be updated with the new details.

Thanks you two for the info never tested this before, I will test this with "Lotus Notes" to see how it works...
